@McPherson's Ridge Animated Battle Map
The Battle of Gettysburg began on July 1, 1863, when the lead elements of Confederate General A. P. Hill's Corps came into contact with United States cavalry outside the little town of Gettysburg. Soon, both sides would be embroiled in a desperate fight that lasted another two days and resulted in over 50,000 casualties.
The rest of Heth's Division would clash with the Iron Brigade and other soldiers from the First Corps and push them back to McPherson's Ridge and then to the Seminary. The Union line would break under pressure from the Confederate attacks and the blue soldiers would run through the town to the safety of the heights beyond.
